Action plan to help treat my congestion

Congestion is a result of your nose feeling stuffy or inflamed. Colds, Flu, Sinuses, and other infections can all cause nasal congestions and stuffy noses. Congestion can impact our daily lifestyles and may cause disturbances while you try concentrating or disrupt your sleep, which can be painful to many.

Fortunately, in most cases, you can cure illnesses relating to nasal congestion with precautionary measures. Usually, you can do so at home within a week. However, if your condition deteriorates, consult a medical professional to make sure it isn’t something serious.

Treatments

You can make use of treatments and anti-congestion medications at home to relieve symptoms. When your nose seems stuffy, it is necessary that your nasal passages and sinuses are moist and not dry. Most people often believe dry air could alleviate and clear up a runny nose. However, the result is quite the opposite. Drying the sinus membranes only causes further irritation.

Home treatments that can keep your nasal passage moist can include:

  • Using a vaporizer or humidifier
  • Taking long showers with lukewarm water allow you to breathe in the steam, which helps clear out your nasal passages. You could also consider breathing in steam from hot water. Ensure the water is not too hot.
  • Drink maximum fluids. Though it may be irritable to consume anything orally, it allows thinning of the mucus and better hydration. Thinner mucus prevents the blocking of the sinuses.
  • Make use of a nasal spray made of a saltwater solution, which prevents your nasal passages from drying out.
  • Using a warm, wet towel over your face can help alleviate symptoms and discomfort. The warmth and steam encourage your nasal passages to open up.
  • Sleeping at night can be quite a challenge when you have a nasal issue. Prepare yourself by lying down on a couple of pillows. Keeping your head elevated and lying down on a stack of a few pillows can allow you to breathe more comfortably.
  • You should avoid swimming in chlorinated pools as the chemicals can further irritate your nasal passages.
  • Over the counter medications can help you mitigate the effects of nasal congestions and its symptoms.

While nasal congestion treatments are available at home, remember that Nasal congestion could be a symptom of other illnesses. Therefore, in the event that your health deteriorates, you might require medical attention from professionals at an urgent care center.
